What to Know Before Co-Signing an Auto Loan

September 17, 2026

Co-signing an auto loan can help a friend or family member qualify for financing, but it comes with real financial responsibility that's worth understanding fully before you agree.

As a cosigner, you're equally responsible for the loan. If the primary borrower misses payments, it affects your credit score just as much as theirs, and lenders can pursue you directly for payment if the loan goes into default.

Before co-signing, it's wise to have an honest conversation about the borrower's budget and repayment plan, and to check whether you'll have any visibility into missed payments before they escalate. Some cosigners request read-only access to loan statements for exactly this reason.

If you're considering co-signing for someone shopping at Kenosha Auto Group, our finance team is happy to walk both of you through exactly what the loan terms and responsibilities look like before anyone signs.
